What is your current obsession?

What is your weirdest obsession?
Gosh. I don't know. I obsess about a lot of things but it usually passes.
What are you wearing today?
I wore a magenta cashmere hoodie, a cream-colored, ruffly tank top, and skinny gray corduroys. I’ve replaced the cords with yoga pants since arriving home.
What’s for dinner?
My darling husband made pork loin and a yummy pasta salad with tomatoes and spinach. I wish I hadn’t had a stomachache. That would have made it immeasurably more enjoyable, but I still loved it.
What would you eat for your last meal?
Expensive cheese. Pineapple. Homegrown tomatoes.
What’s the last thing you bought?
I bought an apple-and-cheese sandwich and three-pepper chips for lunch.
What are you listening to right now?
William is watching basketball.
What do you think of the person who tagged you?

If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished anywhere in the world, where would you like it to be?
I don’t really want to leave my family, but you can’t pass up a fully furnished and paid for house on the coast of South Maui.
If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?
Um. That is far too overwhelming. Maybe somewhere in Hawaii to meditate on how to answer this question?
Which language do you want to learn?
A few. French, Arabic, Mandarin.
What is your favorite colour?
Pink.
What is your favorite piece of clothing in your own wardrobe?
I have a bright yellow wool pencil skirt that I’m fond of. My (see above) magenta cashmere hoodie. Citizens of Humanity jeans.
What is your dream job?
Writer.
What’s your favourite magazine?
Bitch. Bust. Vanity Fair. Body + Soul. Real Simple. Elle Décor. ReadyMade. There are a lot.
If you had £100 now, what would you spend it on?
Travel money. Winter boots. A class.
Describe your personal style?
I love vintage and very feminine things. But I also love very tailored things. Pencil skirts, ballet flats, cardigans, belts, animal prints (esp. zebra). Jackie O. I’m a long-haired person, not a short-haired person. I love glitter and eyeliner and loads of mascara.
What are you going to do after this?
I have some writing to catch up on—work.
What are your favourite films?
Almost Famous, Annie, High Fidelity, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Love Actually, Lost in Translation, The Graduate, all the John Hughes canon. But my favorite types of movies are documentaries.
What’s your favourite fruit?
Pineapple. But I also love apples (but not red or golden delicious). And raspberries. And mango. I love fruit. I hate bananas, though. Gross.
What inspires you?
People who follow through. People who manage to make lemonade out of lemons. People who take the disparate pieces and put them together. People who speak out about injustice. People inspire me, in short. That is why I like to write stories about them.
Also: spectacular summer and fall days and great writing.
Do you collect anything?
The question is, what don’t I collect. I have no filter, so I collect junk mail and nearly-empty chapsticks and god knows what else.
I don’t know. I guess I don’t have a dedicated collection.
Your favourite books?
A tough call. This list is a mile long. By what criteria do you judge a person?
Very interesting question. I don’t know! I have strong feelings about political leanings… I probably judge a lot on that. Sense of humor, apparent kindness, whether they like dogs. . .
What skill would you like to acquire immediately?
Skill or natural talent? Because what I’d love to be able to do is sing. As far as acquired talent, I would like to be good at guitar and piano.
What would you tell yourself 10 years ago? 10 years from now?
10 years ago, I was 18 and starting my freshman year of college. I would tell myself to screw it and take out more loans and study abroad, I would tell myself to get more involved, I would tell myself not to be so damned worried about everything.
10 years from now: I would remind myself that though the 20s were indeed a time of great change and frustration, that there were really awesome parts of my life that I loved and to remember them often. Falling in the for-real love, getting married, living in a loft downtown.

Meme Time
I have a better post, all ready to go, but the photos are NOT WORKING. Alas, will have to be posted this weekend.
1. The phone rings. Who do you want it to be? A publisher.
2. When shopping at the grocery store, do you return your cart? Always. ALWAYS.
3. In a social setting, are you more of a talker or a listener? Depends on the situation, but I’m a talker.
4. Do you take compliments well? I cherish sincere compliments but sometimes I have a hard time accepting them.
5. Do you play Sudoku? It involves numbers…so no. But I'll tell you this: Sudoku was spelled wrong on the meme, and I just corrected it. So there!
6. If abandoned alone in the wilderness, would you survive? I might. By running to civilization.
7. Did you ever go to camp as a kid? We had a cabin. That WAS my summer camp.
8. What was your favorite game as a kid? I liked Scattergories. And card games.
9. Would you slow dance with someone that you knew was married? At a wedding or something for fun? Sure. If it was intended to be something other than just having fun dancing, then no.
10. Could you date someone with different religious beliefs than you? Yes. If I wasn’t married.
11. Do you like to pursue or be pursued? I give you Shakespeare.

13. Do any songs make you cry? Oh God yes. Lots of them. The one that immediately comes to mind is the Christian funeral song, “On Eagles’ Wings.” Jesus. I can’t even think about it or I burst into tears. "The Star Spangled Banner" gets me once in a while. There are other songs, connected to experiences and moments.
14. Are you continuing your education? I will if I can ever afford it. I really think there should be a Dr. in my title. Even though it won’t be in medicine.
15. Do you know how to shoot a gun? No. But I bet I’d be a good shot if I practiced.
16. If your house was on fire, what would be the first thing you grabbed? Molly. If she’s a “thing”. Otherwise, probably my photo box and my jewelry box. I don’t have anything expensive, but stuff rich in memories.

18. Do you think more about the past, present or future? Probably a lot about the future. I should stop doing that so much and focus on here and now.

I wrote the check out, but I must have been distracted, and I didn’t put it in the little holder thing. I found it when I went to write my next check…which was a long time afterward. I called and apologized…and dropped off another check. I couldn't live with the guilt, even though the manager told me it was OK.
25. What is the furthest place you traveled today? Work? Not very far. 12 miles.
26. Do you like mustard? Mmm, yes. And it’s fat-free.
27. Do you prefer to sleep or eat? What? I can’t choose.
28. Do you look like your mom or dad? I look exactly like my mother. I don’t even look related to my dad.
29. How long does it take you in the shower? A long time. Probably 15 minutes. It’s an indulgence.

51. What do you and your parents fight about the most? With my dad? Politics. With my mom? I don’t really fight with her.
52. Are you a gullible person? I don’t think so. Years of my older brother making up stories has made me more critical.
53. Do you need a boyfriend/girlfriend to be happy? I’m married… but I didn’t find him until I felt good about myself.

Overslept into a parallel universe
This morning, our pattern was all out of whack.
William got up early, extra early, to go to work. His alarm went off instead of mine. When he got in the shower, I thought, Oh hell, why do I have this stupid alarm on? I'll be up the second he gets out of the shower....and that was the last thought I had. He came out and got dressed and ready for the day, and left. And I was OUT COLD. People, I sleep hard. It actually kind of freaks me out. I mean, our DOOR OPENED AND CLOSED. Nada. I bet I didn't even move.
Next thing I know, Molly is clawing my hand and snorting, making a fuss, because she wants up on the bed for a snuggle (wood floors+furry paws=she wants a lift). Thank GOD! Because otherwise, I don't know how long I would have slept. Out of the bed I fly, to find a note on the mirror. "Don't forget to move your car by 8. Loves."
Shit! Yes, move the car, move the car. Fly outside in my PJs, whip the car into a different parking spot.
Normally, William and I get together every morning, talking about news on the Today show, pouring OJ, trading spaces at the sink to brush our teeth. I'm used to our routine. This morning, it was like a parallel universe, and I had come totally undone.

How long have you been together? nearly four years
How long did you know each other before you started dating? depends on how you look at it. We have known who each other was for....about 15 years. (Whoa, we're getting old.) But we never spoke a WORD to each other until about four years ago. Yep.
Who asked who out? William asked me. Well, rather, he told me. He said "And when you get back from your parents' cabin, we'll go out to dinner." I think it's safe to say I was completely flabbergasted.
How old were each of you when you met? 24ish
How old are each of you now? We're both 28
How tall are each of you? I'm 5'6"ish and he's 6'2"ish
Do you have any children together? Nope. But we fight over names of children fairly often, for a couple who has no plans for children in the near future.
What about pets? Momo the wonderpoo
Did you go to the same school? Yep, both high school (where our lockers were FIVE lockers apart) and college.
Are you from the same hometown? Just a few blocks apart.
Who is the most sensitive? I think we're both sensitive people. I'm probably more sensitive though.
Where do you eat out most as a couple? We're more the take-in type. Taste of Thailand. Mmmm.
Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Hawaii. Did you know it's like the place on Earth that is the farthest from any other inhabitable place on Earth? Whoa.
Who has the worst temper? William. I'm no angel, either.
Who does/did the cooking? We split. William's a better imaginative cook. I need a recipe.
Who is more social? Me
Who is the neat-freak? William
Who hogs the bed? That is a huge point of contention. Best not to bring it up.
Who wakes up earlier? We get up pretty much at the same time.
Who has the bigger family? William!
Do you have little pet names for each other? William calls me Smalls a lot. I call him honey or darling, usually.
How long did it take to get serious? Not long. A couple months? We moved in together after six months, so it moved fast. I knew on the first date that I was in love.
Who eats more? I can definitely hold my own, but when push comes to shove, Wm eats more. I can eat more cheese!
Who sings better? Probably me but I don't have any kind of voice to boast about.
Who’s older? William, by 20 days.
Who does the dishes? we take turns

Who drives when you are together? We switch off. Depends on where we're going.

Who eats more sweets? We both have our weaknesses.
I promise that I will do some honest-to-God writing soon. If I don't, I might go crazy.

Interview
Doahleigh interviewed me as part of a fun little blog-meme thing. Fun questions! The deal is, then I have to offer to interview someone and give them five questions. Consider this your invitation--let me know if you'd like to be interviewed (by a professional interviewer, no less!).

1. Would you rather be beautiful but always smell terrible or be ugly but smell lovely?
I've heard from many sources that supermodels smell awful because all they do is smoke and drink Diet Coke and can't seem to take care of themselves, but they always manage to get through life, and pretty well at that.
But, being pretty, while nice, isn't really that important. I think people who don't look perfect tend to be more interesting since they can't rely on their looks to, err, catwalk through life.
And seeing as how I'm a total perfume nut, I don't think I could smell icky. So I'll go with ugly and nice-smelling.
2. The old adage says to regret nothing, and that's probably true. But if you could change something you've done, what would it be and why?
I think there are lots of things I would change about things I've done. Think about when something really bizarre or inappropriate catches you off-guard and you don't react the way you'd have liked to. I have a few of those. And of course things I've said or done to someone, that in retrospect, weren't cool at all.
But I think one of my most nameable big regrets is probably not going for a bigger college experience. I got a great education, no doubt, but I could have done so much more than just land on the Dean's List. I would have MOST DEFINITELY studied abroad, found more journalism activities to be involved with, made more of those experiences. It goes so fast, and you take for granted how wonderful that learning curve and time to learn about yourself, is. Grades aren't everything.
3. What are some of your nicknames? Tell us the stories behind them.
I really am not a person with many nicknames. I can think of two, but they aren't widely used or anything. Most people just call me Katie or Kate. I guess I don't really do anything outstanding to warrant one.
William calls me Smalls. It comes from the phrase "You're killin' me, Smalls!" from the movie The Sandlot. I think he just calls me that because I'm so much shorter than he is (I'm 5'6", he's 6'3").

I remember it was a library book.) Anyway, I came across a word that I didn't recognize--"puny." So I came out into the living room with the book and asked my family if that word was "punny", and what that meant.
I imagine that my older brother found it endearing (as an adult I can understand that), so he laughed and laughed and laughed. I was a pretty serious child, and it infuriated me that no matter what I did, he teased me.
Well, like any nickname, it stuck. To this day, my brother usually calls me Punny, Punsy or some version of it. Eventually, I just embraced it. I remember the first time that he called me Punny and I didn't get mad--it was after college! I think he was a little let down--after all, that's what brothers live for, a reaction--but it hasn't stopped him from calling me Punsy!
4. What is one of your own favorite physical features and why? Also, you should show us a picture (if appropriate).
Um, I think probably my favorite physical feature is my eyes. They're big. And I think the color is kind of cool. They're gray, mostly, with some gold flecks in them. But when I put different eyeshadow colors on, or wear certain colors, they run the gamut from blue-blue to blue-green to green.
And even though my hair is unruly, it's thick and healthy.
5. When and why was the last time you cried?
I cry a lot. Tears come to my eyes, I would say, nearly every. It doesn't mean I bawl or sob, just that something touches me. When I'm angry, I cry. When I'm sad, I cry. When I'm really happy, I cry. When I hear the right song at the right time, I cry. See what I'm saying? So, without further clarification on the amount of cryage, I cried today when my brother sent me a picture text of his dog, who was really sick, but seems to be on the mend now.
Bonus question: Who is John Galt?
I had to Google this, so I assume that's cheating. I tried to think of it for a while but came up blank. I don't know if I shoudl reveal the answers since other people are getting this same question. Hint: I haven't read the book.

1. Would you rather be beautiful but always smell terrible or be ugly but smell lovely?
I've heard from many sources that supermodels smell awful because all they do is smoke and drink Diet Coke and can't seem to take care of themselves, but they always manage to get through life, and pretty well at that.
But, being pretty, while nice, isn't really that important. I think people who don't look perfect tend to be more interesting since they can't rely on their looks to, err, catwalk through life.
And seeing as how I'm a total perfume nut, I don't think I could smell icky. So I'll go with ugly and nice-smelling.
2. The old adage says to regret nothing, and that's probably true. But if you could change something you've done, what would it be and why?
I think there are lots of things I would change about things I've done. Think about when something really bizarre or inappropriate catches you off-guard and you don't react the way you'd have liked to. I have a few of those. And of course things I've said or done to someone, that in retrospect, weren't cool at all.
But I think one of my most nameable big regrets is probably not going for a bigger college experience. I got a great education, no doubt, but I could have done so much more than just land on the Dean's List. I would have MOST DEFINITELY studied abroad, found more journalism activities to be involved with, made more of those experiences. It goes so fast, and you take for granted how wonderful that learning curve and time to learn about yourself, is. Grades aren't everything.
3. What are some of your nicknames? Tell us the stories behind them.
I really am not a person with many nicknames. I can think of two, but they aren't widely used or anything. Most people just call me Katie or Kate. I guess I don't really do anything outstanding to warrant one.
William calls me Smalls. It comes from the phrase "You're killin' me, Smalls!" from the movie The Sandlot. I think he just calls me that because I'm so much shorter than he is (I'm 5'6", he's 6'3").

A to Z on my last night of being 27.
A. Attached or single? Attached.
B. Best friend? I keep all my friends near and dear. But my longest-running, closest friends are my family members, my BFF since first grade, and William.I'm not really into hierarchy though. It seems mean.
C. Cake or pie? Coconut cream pie. Otherwise, cake. Red velvet's my favorite.
D. Day of choice? Saturday. I'd pick Sunday if Monday didn't come after it.
E. Essential item? Mascara.
F. Favorite color? Pink or purple. Black for clothing.
G. Gummy bears or worms? Bears, especially the Haribo ones in the gold bag.
H. Hometown? The dub!
I. Favorite indulgence? Massage.
J. January or July? July
K. Kids? I think so, someday.
L. Life isn't complete without? Love (not just the married kind), books, music, tasty food, and a dog.

V. Vegetable? spring sugar snap peas, asparagus, broccoli, red peppers, kohlrabi, corn on the cob, butternut squash, cilantro (is that a veggie?), homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, carrots...I like vegetables a lot.
W. Worst habit? Picking at and biting the dry, dry skin around my nails.procrastinating.
X. X-ray or ultrasound? Yucko either way. But an ultrasound might mean a baby! So that's super cool.
Y. Your favorite foods? Mom's spaghetti. Pineapple. Cheese. Greek yogurt. Farmer's Market veggies. Pot roast. Fresh homegrown tomatoes. Haralson apples. Bacon. Ice cream. Anything from a Thai restaurant, pretty much. I love food. Life is too short to not enjoy it.

Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write their own blog with their 7 things as well as these rules. Here are mine:
1. I didn’t have allergies until a few years ago. Now I’m allergic to shellfish, I think mold, pencillin, and other seasonal things. When I get an attack I look like I’ve been crying, as in this morning, and I feel like I have to run around telling everyone that I’m FINE, it’s just ALLERGIES.
2. One of my best talents may be worrying. I’m working on this.
3. I just got tickets to see both Prince and Kelly Clarkson in July. I love music.
4. I am a geek about clothes. I love clothes. But I wish I was better about finding pieces that I can invest in and then accent pieces and figuring out a clothing budget that works for me. Part of my problem is that I have expensive taste. Line up four perfectly plain white T-shirts and I will pick the $150 one.
5. I subscribe to the following magazines: Jane, Brides, Modern Bride, ReadyMade, Entertainment Weekly (I got a $9 subscription, so I went with it), Elle Décor, my New Yorker just lapsed. We also get Metropolis and will be getting Met Home. I buy InStyle regularly, and Bitch and Bust are probably my faves. I have subscribed to Mother Jones, Interview, Rolling Stone, and various others over the years. I think I got on a cheap subscription list, and when they’re cheap I can’t resist. I think my first subscription was Seventeen. I know I am missing some. I really am a magazine junkie. Can’t get enough! Also, I hate to fly but the airport newsstands usually calm me down. I buy lots of political magazines. I want to subscribe to Vanity Fair, now that I think about it.
6. I am not a morning person. I wish I was, but it would be going against my body chemistry. I would like it if the world ran from like 10-6 instead, so that I could stay up later and get up later.
7. I’m really picky about my food. I am an adventurous eater, especially considering how picky I was as a child, but I have certain rules that must be obeyed. Textures are key. I don’t eat canned peas because of the texture, but I like pea soup, sugar snap peas cooked in the pod, etc. My food cannot touch, unless it is things that are supposed to go together and don’t have opposing textures, i.e. mashed potatoes and meat are ok to touch, mashed potatoes and corn, not so much. Gravies and sauces can only touch the things they are supposed to touch. When I moved in with William, my sister bought me a pink plastic divided plate. I love divided plates, esp. at picnics, but I don’t need one at regular meals. J Now foods like Thai or other Asian or Indian foods, that are more like stews, etc., that’s also OK. It’s meant to be that way. Also I eat one thing at a time usually. Usually veggies first, because they are better when they are way hot.
