makeup, makeup!

my camera is missing its charger right now, but otherwise i'd have photos to show you my embarrassing amount of makeup, like nanette and wan's posts. i'm going to write about it anyway, and then post photos later. (there's a bonus photo at the bottom of this entry).

i remember the first makeup that i got my hands on. or at least i can say that it's the first makeup i remember. my mom always wore "barely pink" lipstick, and it came in a navy blue tube with a clear plastic top. it could have been wet 'n' wild. she had another plummy color which i don't recall the name of, but she let me put on when i wanted to dance around our living room to bruce springsteen (she had the born in the u.s.a. record).

i was always a beauty girl. i loved watching my mom get ready to go out, her curling iron, her blush, her navy blue eyeliner. i loved when she let me put some on. i can remember the first eyeshadow i ever owned--it was mary kay, a single eyeshadow pan, very light pink. i can't remember how it came into my possession, but the rule was that i couldn't wear it to school. i can't remember how old i was, exactly, but i think i was probably in third grade. i remember taking it to school in my pocket, and putting it on in the bathroom. i was like eight! that's obsession, my friends.

then i remember the first makeup i wore to school. i convinced my mom to let me buy a maybelline palette of shadows, four browns, in a super-slim navy blue case. it was a major coup. and the catalyst to the rest of my makeuppy life.

let me illustrate to you out of control this has gotten. a couple of weeks ago, william literally began tossing products out of the bathroom into our kitchen, and told me that if i didn't find a place to put them, they were getting tossed. a scare tactic, but hey if we're talking about my beauty products, scare tactics are going to work! i ended up filling one of those flat boxes you slide under a bed for clothing--full. Then we have an ikea closet in our bathroom, which was also kinda full (i blame that on poor shelving options for small objects). ok, so then a couple of weeks later, we went to ikea and got me the equivalent of a craftsman tool chest. not as big, but six drawers. full, nearly. my shower currently has three shampoos and conditioners (six total), soap, three face washes.. it goes on and on.

i have daily routine, though. i just probably experiment more than the average girl.
in a given day, i wear:
tinted moisturizer--"inner light--by aveda. spf 15, ladies! sheer coverage. perfect.
stick concealer. i use max factor at the moment (and i think it's the best, even though it's drugstore), but i found out it's part of a horrible scheme of animal testing, etc., so i am leaving it soon. stick concealer for under the eyes (don't forget those corners!) and little red spots i get since i am so fair.
i use a primer on my lids to keep shadow put--hands down the best beauty trick ever. i have used urban decay's potion, nars' primer, and mac. i think they all work really well. i usually wear two-three shades of eyeshadow (highlighter, sometimes on the ball, and the crease), plus eyeliner (usually powder or gel, not almost ever the stick, it just doesn't last long enough). i also wear tons o' mascara because there is nothing more fab than great lashes. (i like tarte's lights, camera, lashes) but my favorite mascara is l'oreal's voluminous. totally underrated, better than diorshow. and it's only $7! or less when it goes on sale at target.
i usually wear some kind of powder blush, but i redden very easily, so i tend toward peach or bronzy tones so that i don't make myself redder. buff by mac is my favorite. my favorite bronzer is origins, although mac makes some good ones too. i love to put a little pink over the top (old makeup artists' trick)--i've been using the barbie loves mac in blossom. i have used tarte's cheek stain in a couple of different colors, too.
oh, then the lip. i love lip gloss and lipstick, but i tend to rub my lips together a lot and touch them, and thus it comes off. lip pencil was a great invention for people like me, helps keep it all on longer. i tend to wear sheer lip colors because usually my eyes are pretty done up. . . my favorite lipstick is pomp-adorable from mac, which is now discontinued (WHY oh WHY God, WHY???). i bought up a bunch though, so i have a few stocked up. it's the perfect shade of purple. in the nicest purple ever. so pretty. although i occasionally wear red lipstick, lady bug, by mac, or something dark and crazy, normally i have a lighter lip.
i'm also a lotion freak. lots of it, all the time. part of that is having dry skin. washing my hands int he winter, especially with public bathroom soap, is killa. my hands immediately start itching and burning. anything with butter in the title is like buttah in my mind. my favorite smell is fig and brown sugar from bath and body works, but i also love all the body butters at body shop. oh. hell. i love lotion. there are a lot of places i'd take it from.
i also love benefit's some kind-a beautiful sheer foundation stuff. great. sheer. easy to use. good coverage. no cakeyness.
i could seriously go on and on.
oh! wait! dr pepper chapstick is actually my favorite lip product of all time. it's true. a little shine, a little color, yummy taste. it's awesome.
add to this that part of my job description is "beauty editor." it's true peeps. i get to write about it for a living!
and we didn't even touch hair products. . . (quick and dirty: catwalk's curls rock line, all of it, matrix's smoothing line for straight-hair days, tresemme hairspray, bumble and bumble's hair powder.)
it's a colorful world, people.
when i went to prince with my friend ang, we went and got our makeup done by my favorite artist (i'm picky). this is way overboard, but this is prince people! avril makes me feel like a million bucks. we had a fun night that night. i cropped this photo so you can see the awesome makeup job (and yes those lashes have help.)

ang, i didn't post your photo cos i wasn't sure if i could. don't be offended! i can add you back in!
